The Trans Adriatic Pipeline opens up Europe’s Southern Gas Corridor.
The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) consortium selected the Dresser-Rand business, part of Siemens Power and Gas Division, to provide six 15-megawatt SGT-400-driven turbo compressor trains for pipeline stations in Greece and Albania.
The pipelines in the Southern Gas Corridor will transport natural gas from the Shah Deniz II field in Azerbaijan in the Caspian Sea to Europe. TAP is the missing link that will allow this natural gas resource to be exploited.
Each of the six gas turbine-driven compressor trains for the compressor stations at Trans Adriatic Pipeline comprises an SGT-400 industrial gas turbine and a Siemens barrel-type STC-SV compressor.
The Dresser-Rand business will supply six SGT-400 industrial gas turbines for compressor stations at the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.
The approximately 870-kilometer-long (541-mile) Trans Adriatic Pipeline will connect with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline at the Turkish-Greek border at Kipoi, cross Greece and Albania and the Adriatic Sea, and come ashore in southern Italy. The landfall in Italy provides multiple opportunities to transport the natural gas to large European markets like Germany, France and the UK.

Each of the six gas turbine-driven compressor trains comprises an SGT-400 industrial gas turbine and a Siemens barrel-type STC-SV compressor. The Dresser-Rand business will deliver three compressor trains to the compressor station in Kipoi, Greece – the beginning of the TAP at the border to Turkey. The TAP’s landfall in Albania will be 17 kilometers (11 miles) northwest of Fier, up to 400 meters (1,312 feet) inland from the shoreline. Another three units will be installed in the compressor station near Fier. Here the natural gas will be compressed up to 130 bar (1,885 psi) and make its way along the 105-kilometer (65-mile) seabed from the Albanian to the Italian coast.
“Siemens and the Dresser-Rand business were selected for their expertise, know-how and robust safety record in providing highly reliable gas turbine and turbo compressor units, which are an integral piece of our pipeline,” said Ian Bradshaw, managing director of the TAP consortium. Installation of the equipment is scheduled for 2017 and the pipeline is expected to begin operating in late 2019. ▪
